When it comes to custom builds at Urban Building Solutions, lawns and landscaping are just as important as our homes themselves… curb appeal is crucial, after all! We’ve come to rely on go-to landscapers Liconas Landscaping, who always do a fantastic job with each and every custom home we produce or remodel. Each landscape plan is unique with some special touches added here and then and customized to our client’s desires.

Typically, we start off by installing sod, which is dependent on how much sun and shade the yard gets throughout the day. Then, we look at plants, trees, and even stones that will fit with each plot, while doing everything we can to keep as many original trees as possible. They don’t call Raleigh the City of Oaks for nothing!

For most of our builds, we opt for hearty annual plants that do not require a lot of upkeep, as we don’t want the new homebuyers to have to worry about plans dying within the first month of them moving in. Moving is stressful enough as it is already! If possible, we’ll try to work with the buyers beforehand to decide what plans fit their tastes.

New Hardiness Zones

In 2023, the USDA released a new Plant Hardiness Zone Map, the newest update since 2012. The map is based on 30-year averages of the lowest annual winter temperatures, and is used to help gardeners, growers, and consumers figure out which plant species are most likely to thrive in their area. As a result of higher winter temps, the Triangle area moved from Zone 7b (5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit) to Zone 8a (10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit).

Thriving NC Plant Life

Due to NC’s climate, there are certain plants that do better here than in other areas of the world. Raleigh has a handful of native plants that tend to do well here, saving you time and money—and in turn helping restore natural habitats. These include butterfly weed, cardinal flower, Carolina phlox, coral honeysuckle, flowering dogwood, and more. When in doubt, always go with native plants!
